Unlike data management software turned forensic tool, Device Seizure has its roots in digital forensics with such things as deleted data recovery, full data dumps of certain cell phone models, logical and physical acquisitions of PDAs, data cable access, and advanced reporting. The amount and quality of data you can get from a full physical acquisition far surpasses the information you can get from a simple logical acquisition. Accessing phones via IrDA and Bluetooth should only be used when other data connections are not available due to the insecure nature of these communication methods. You can get a license of Device Seizure for the cost of the yearly maintenance for some tools that don't support deleted data acquisitions. With support for more devices than ever before, no toolbox will be complete without Device Seizure.
What's the difference between Device Seizure and other commercial or free products to view Cell Phone data?
Most commercial or free software is designed to not only view data but to upload data. This is not a safe way to perform a forensic examination. In fact, even some software marketed as forensic software warns of possible data loss. Device Seizure does not allow data to be changed on the device. Paraben can also add support for unsupported cell phone models from supported manufacturers with simple log files and a little time. Add all this together and there's no comparison for forensic acquisition, analysis, and reporting of handheld device data.
Paraben focuses on the physical level of acquisition offering more physical downloads of devices than any other company. Logical data acquisitions can't acquire more data than the device Operating System was designed to allow. The physical acquisition plug-in is unique to Paraben offering memory imaging on most of the devices supported in Device Seizure which is where most deleted data** can be recovered. For more information about Paraben's Device Seizure and supported phone models CLICK HERE. Even within supported manufacturers and models, there are certain limitations in data that can be acquire and/or parsed. With a lot of the devices that are acquired by Device Seizure, the data comes down from the device in a very raw format. Most of the data is in proprietary format. We can parse a lot of this data (such as images, text messages, etc.) but we cannot parse it all. We will continue to add data parsing technology in Device Seizure over time and we hope to offer more and more functions for our users. Also keep in mind that phones are fragile devices and many times internal hardware failure, firmware updates, and many other circumstances can prevent data from being acquired even from supported models.
**Please Note: Paraben's SIM Card Seizure and Paraben's Device Seizure are able to recover deleted SMS data associated with transmission of text data on a GSM network. However, some cell/mobile phones store SMS on the actual device rather than the SIM card. If that is the case, the recovery of this data may or may not be possible using Device Seizure, depending on the specific device model. As with any deleted data, recovery depends on whether or not the information has been overwritten with new information. Because of these factors, Paraben cannot guarantee the recovery of deleted data.
Demo Limitations: 30 days 23 executions, 30 MB of acquired data for PDAs, and single area of acquisition for Cell Phones
Please Note: Model support is limited in 64 bit operating systems due to availability of manufacturer's 64 bit drivers for old phones.
